Keep Your Family Safe From Two Very Real Threats

Properly functioning smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are perhaps the most important safety devices you can have in your home; however, the importance of these key pieces of equipment is often taken for granted. By providing an essential, audible early warning of a potentially fatal problem, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors alert your family to the issue and give you the opportunity to safely escape while a fire is still in its early stages, and/or before carbon monoxide levels reach an unhealthy concentration.

You may be surprised to learn that:

  • Operational smoke detectors that have been installed properly and maintained in working order dramatically reduce your risk of dying in a fire. Approximately three of every five home fire deaths took place in homes without any functional smoke alarms.
  • Most fatal fires occur at night, when we are sleeping, which explains why working smoke alarms increase the chance of surviving a home fire by 50 percent.[1]

In addition to other California fire codes, section 310 of the California Building Code provides clear guidelines about the need for functional smoke alarms in residences, stating that:

“All residences must have smoke detectors installed. A residence includes all dwelling units, hotels, lodging such as guest rooms and group homes and any other living spaces that are utilized for sleeping. Detectors must be installed according to manufacturer’s instructions and generally accepted wiring and installation standards.”[2]

Surprisingly, in spite of these requirements, and the widespread public awareness about the importance of smoke alarms, one of the most common factors in most fatal fires is the lack of properly installed, and functioning, smoke alarms.

While fire safety is a common topic of discussion, the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning are often overlooked. Carbon monoxide is a deadly, colorless, odorless, poisonous gas, which means that most people will not know they have been exposed until it is too late. At Desert Alarm, Inc., we work with our clients to ensure that their families are safe from the potential hazards of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. Our state-of-the-art smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are up to California Building Code standards and will be properly installed by trained technicians to ensure that you and your family are never vulnerable to these potentially fatal threats.
